The GCSE Art & Design course is for those of you who have an interest in the visual world around you and within you. Everyone has something to learn from looking at the world around you! Art & Design at The West Bridgford School is an academic subject that will develop skills that are valued by colleges, employers and universities: such as problem solving, using your initiative, decision making, insight, creative thinking and imagination. On the course you will have the opportunity to use sculpture, painting, printing, textiles, using IT, photography and digital imagery.
Assessment
The course is assessed through coursework, which accounts for 60% of the overall grade and a final exam which is 40% of your marks.
You are able to prepare for the exam beforehand and complete a timed piece of practical work during the exam.
Other Information
Your coursework portfolio will begin in year 10 when you will develop your skills and confidence through a short project which then leads into the major personal project, you can work in 2D and 3D to develop your skills. During the course you will have two mock exams that will enable you to understand how the terminal exam works and also give you opportunities to add to your coursework. Throughout the course you will be guided and supported by your Art teacher, however we also encourage you to use your own interests and ideas to develop your work. We take you to visit Art galleries to experience Art and Design at first hand and also give you the opportunity to work with practicing artists.

Am I good enough?
If you are achieving Grade 4/5 or above, or can demonstrate a passion for the subject then yes. However throughout the course we teach you the skills and knowledge you need to succeed.
Do I like to use my imagination?
We will help you to develop your powers of imagination and creativity through using many different ways of looking and creating.
Am I interested in the visual world?
We are bombarded with visual images everyday from adverts, film, TV, illustration, websites, X Box and Playstation; all these images were designed and created by someone with training in the visual arts.
How will Art & Design help me in the future?
A good A-C at GCSE is always a help! However Art & Design is essential if you are interested in Architecture, Graphics, Digital Design, Photography, Animation, Product Design, Interior Design, Textile Design, Theatre/Costume Design, Fashion Design, Beautician, Illustration or Art College and beyond!
