Graphic Design
Graphic Design requires students to design creatively using various graphics and design techniques to produce design work and 2/3D products and packaging. There will be opportunities to use Photoshop and photography as well as more practical ways of creating imagery. You will develop important skills such as problem solving, using your initiative, decision making, insight, creative thinking and imagination.
You will also study the work of other Graphic Designers, Graphic Artists and Photographers to help inspire your own work, as well as working to a brief - as would be expected in industry.
Graphic Design cannot be studied with Art GCSE.
Assessment
Students will follow a two-year course, which will involve producing a portfolio of work exploring a range of graphic design ideas, and projects, which could be either 2D or 3D. Areas that you could explore are:
- communication graphics
- design for print
- advertising and branding
- illustration
- package design
- typography
- film and TV
The portfolio contributes 60% of the overall grade. 40% of the assessment is a practical exam in which pupils will design and make a graphics product.
Other Information
Your coursework portfolio will begin in year 10 when you will develop your skills and confidence through a series of short projects, this body of work will then progress onto a more in-depth and personal theme to extend your coursework portfolio.
During the two-year course students will develop knowledge and understanding of a wide range of materials, tools, equipment, processes, and develop their visual communication skills.
Students will also develop skills of creativity and critical analysis through making links between the principles of good design, existing solutions and technological knowledge.
