Maths
Mathematics is a compulsory core subject. Pupils have a transition year in Year 9 during which they study the key areas of Number, Algebra, Ratio & Proportion, Geometry & Measures and Probability & Statistics, ready to develop these further throughout Years 10 and 11. They will develop an understanding that mathematics can be used to develop models of real situations and will be required to recall, select and apply mathematical formulae.
Maths is taught in attainment based groups. There is a strong emphasis on ensuring that every pupil is learning at a pace that is relevant to them. Movement between groups is possible but is kept to a minimum. All pupils are encouraged to stretch themselves to achieve above their potential.
Assessment
The assessment consists of three examination papers taken at the end of the course.
There are two levels of entry.
- The grades available at the Higher level are 4 to 9
- The grades available at the Foundation level are 1 to 5
At the end of Year 10, all pupils will sit a full GCSE style paper. This will be taken internally in full exam conditions. The results of this exam, marked and graded in-house, will help to determine the tier of paper to be taken in the Summer of Year 11.
