English Language
Everyone will take English Language at GCSE. You will be asked to respond in a variety of ways to texts such as letters and newspaper articles, advertisements, films, travel writing, diaries and novels including 20th and 21st century literature by writers from many different cultures and backgrounds.
You will be encouraged to develop drafting, proof-reading and IT skills to a high level and to write for a wide range of audiences and purposes in a variety of genres.
You will be given the opportunity to consider and discuss controversial topics of general interest and to take part in small group work and paired oral activities in order to help you learn to express your ideas clearly.
You will be required to study the form of spoken language, to complete formal presentations and to participate in group debates.
Assessment
The attainment targets you will be assessed by are:
- Reading
- Writing
There will be two written examinations which will account for 100% of the total mark.
There will also be a separate accreditation for speaking and listening controlled assessment.

Do I take both English Language and English literature?
Yes. You will study both English Language and English Literature in your Timetabled English lessons.
Do I get different Grades for Language and Literature?
Yes. You get a separate GCSE Grade from 1-9 for both Language and Literature.
