Chemistry

Chemistry is the study of materials, their properties and reactions. The course fully explores these chemical behaviours in three main areas:

  1. Inorganic Chemistry is firmly based on the periodic classification of the elements.
  2. Organic Chemistry develops themes on structure, synthesis, analysis and reaction mechanisms.
  3. Physical Chemistry includes atomic structure, chemical bonding and structure, energetics and equilibria.

Chemistry has a strong emphasis on practical skills, requires problem-solving ability and 20% of the marks are awarded for higher level

Year 12 Year 13

The Year 12 course is split into 3 main areas:

  • Physical Chemistry
  • Inorganic Chemistry
  • Organic Chemistry

Assessed by 3 exams of 2 hours at the end of Year 13 covering Year 12 content plus further in-depth coverage of:

  • Physical Chemistry
  • Inorganic Chemistry
  • Organic Chemistry

Assessment Information

  • 15% of the marks in the final exams will be on skills developed in the key practicals throughout the year.
  • 20% of the marks in the final exams will be on mathematical skills.
