West Bridgford Dance Girls win Regional Dance Competition

The beg of the end trophy 1On the 24th February 2016, over 30 students travelled to The Royal Albert Hall to compete in the East Midlands Dance Competition ‘The Great Big Dance Off’.  Included in the competition were a variety of dance pieces from Bollywood and street to contemporary dance and ballet. The competition was tough but the girls from West Bridgford weren’t phased as they took their place centre stage.

The students had entered 3 dance pieces in total into the competition; ‘Feeling Good’ by Michael Bublé, in black and teal sequin coated dresses (KS3 – KS5 category), ‘Charleston to Street’, finished with black bowler hats and tapping feet (KS3), as well as ‘The Beginning of the End’, dressed in all black with bright red tribal face paint including sharp and sophisticated movements (KS4-5 category).  The students were ready to perform, practising their routines backstage tirelessly before their big performance.

All of the students involved were fantastic on stage and blew the audience and judges away! From breath taking acrobatic lifts to the piercing war cries from the KS4-5 students. The girls were truly outstanding and are such dedicated young ladies, it is clear to see they all have a bright future ahead of them. I couldn’t be prouder of their performances during the show.

It finally came to the time of the results were all students who performed in the competition sat on stage anxiously awaiting the final result of who had qualified for the Nationals competition! The KS3 dance piece ‘Charleston to Street’ placed a strong 3rd place in the competition, heartbreakingly missing out by 3 points on qualification.  As they announced the results for the KS4/5 category the girls became increasing nervous when the head judge announced that they found themselves in an unusual situation, where they had a tie for 1st place! The head judge then read ‘and the winner is with a staggering 290 points out of a possible 300’… The West Bridgford School! The girls were elated with the victory as they went to collect their winning trophy! All students were over the moon with the result, cheering on stage but at all times being graceful in victory.  However, the girls were still a little confused at which dance piece had won! The judge unbelievably recalled that both dance pieces had placed joint 1st with 290 points each! This is the first time in the history of the competition that this has been achieved as well as a first for The West Bridgford School holding a Regional title within dance.

The students will go on to perform at the National Finals in Northampton, in July where they will compete to try and secure the National title.
